A clear license to operate is essential for the metals sector to demonstrate that metals can be produced and used safely, ensuring continued market access, investment, and regulatory acceptance.
European Metals stresses that demonstrating controlled exposure, low emissions, and safe use is crucial to maintain access to markets, financing, and public trust, especially under the EU’s Zero Pollution and Chemicals Strategy frameworks.
European Metals works to protect and reinforce the industry’s license to operate. We support members with issues related to environmental permits, ensuring they can meet EU requirements efficiently and consistently.
We follow and actively contribute to the development of Best Available Techniques Reference documents (BREFs) relevant to the metals sector, providing technical input so that future obligations remain achievable and reflect real industrial conditions.
We also advocate for fair, science-based standards, including for Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) under the Water Framework Directive, air quality standards under the Ambient Air Quality Directive and Best Available Techniques – Associated Environmental Performance Levels ( BAT-AEPLs )under the Industrial Emissions Directive, ensuring that environmental limits are proportionate, risk-based, and aligned with metals specificities.
Through expertise and coordinated advocacy, we help facilitate a stable regulatory environment that allows the metals industry to operate responsibly and competitively.
