EU Bilateral Trade Relations

EU stronger trade relations with like-minded partners (i.e. Canada, Australia, the US, the UK, Norway and Japan, among others) help secure access to critical raw materials and reduce supply chain risks in the metals sector.

Why it’s important

Foreign dominance in key strategic areas, such as China’s position as the main global actor in the production of processed minerals and metals, exposes the EU non-ferrous metals industry to possible supply crises.

At a time of growing geopolitical instability, effective EU trade relations with strategic partners that support the WTO and multilateral cooperation can help uphold a rules-based international trading system and protect the EU’s deeply integrated overseas supply chains.

Our messages

We champion deeper cooperation with other like-minded partners by:

  • Securing long-term trade ties while safeguarding open, fair and rules-based trade.
  • Removing trade barriers and unjustified tariffs between key partners, such as the US Section 232 tariffs on aluminium and copper.
  • Addressing common challenges, such as global overcapacity, and promoting an ambitious reform of the WTO.
